OUR HISTORY
The origins of the Lotería Nacional para la Asistencia Pública, ranges from the Colonial Period, when the King of Spain, Charles the III and the Viceroy Marqués de Croix supported Francisco Javier de Sarria’s project to create a lottery. The proposal of Francisco Xavier de Sarria was based in a logical, rational and simple system adopted by the European Lotteries a year afterwards, known then as a “Modern” or “Mexican” system.
On august 7th, 1770, was announced that the New Spain will have a Lottery, the first in Latin-America under the name “Real Lotería General de la Nueva España”. The first draw was held on May 13th, 1771 and ten years later, the Viceroy Don Martin de Mayorga awarded the proceeds to an orphanage named: the Hospicio de Pobres, fact that will lead the Institution vocation to the public assistance.
During the Independence War, the Viceroy Felix Maria Calleja, created two Lotteries, one for the Capital and another for the States, with the goal of fighting the insurgency.
With Mr. Porfirio Díaz as President, the now known as the Lotería Nacional, supported many constructions as the General Hospital and the Castaneda mental hospital in Mexico City.
The now named Lotería Nacional para la Asistencia Pública is actually situated on the “Moro” building. The Moro was the first construction in Mexico, built of a procedure of elastic flotation, work of the engineer José Antonio Cuevas. The building was opened on November 28, 1946. The Lotería Nacional para la Asistencia Pública, chaired the Corporacion Iberoamericana de Loterias y Apuestas de Estado (CIBELAE) from October 1998 to November 2001, and was part of the board of the World Lottery Association (WLA). The Lotería Nacional para la Asistencia Pública is also a member of the North American State and Provincial Lotteries Association (NASPL).
